Warning: violence, profanity, psychological trauma, forced seduction and sexual content.

Book three in this series. Yaaas! *hands in the air* This is the shortest one, coming in with a word count of 137k. I was ruthless with cutting this time around. This story was much, much longer, but in the end, I thought it read better shorter.

Confession time. I don't love Indira (heroine). We wouldn't be besties. I like her, but she's too hardcore for me. I respect/fear women like her. I so wanted to portray her strong personality and mixed cultural heritage to the best of my ability, without her coming across as cold or bitchy. Bhyr (hero) was difficult. He's a bad man. But no individual is all one characteristic, and somebody's villain is another's hero. He's complicated and misunderstood. He needs forgiveness in a Big Way, and that is a huge theme in this book. Forgiveness. Not much of that around nowadays, and it fascinates me how much we all want it, but refuse/are unable to give it. There is a darker, more sinister tone to this book than the previous two because of the subject matter. I didn't go mad on the storyline, either. I pretty much coloured within the lines, but I pushed several scenes to the extreme... so... you were warned.

For the cover, I didn't follow the background colour scheme of my previous two books in the series. The yellow/orange just looked better against his blue skin and popped more in thumbnail size.
Funnily enough, two of the things I mentioned (moaned) about last time I wrote a blog post have changed for the better. Adobe Photoshop has changed–again– but is a tad more user friendly. At first, I wasn't thrilled, but after re-doing the Bhyr cover, I'm used to it now.

The KDP reporting for books enrolled in Kindle Unlimited has also improved. Massively. However, I chose to upload my book everywhere (iBooks, Kobo, Nook, Googleplay, etc). In the last four years, I first uploaded on Kindle exclusively for three months in their Unlimited programme. What I've seen is a huge drop off in purchases on any site but Amazon. This could be a matter of readers simply switching over to Kindle or losing interest in my books on those platforms. Who knows. I'm going to go back to publishing across all platforms first, and then cycling books into the Unlimited programme.

As usual, I'll be sending out my newsletter once I'm happy the book has uploaded and I've looked at them and checked nothing has gone wonky.

Peace and love. Pxx

Well now, the second book in the Alien Warrior saga has finally been released. So sorry for the delay (I explained what happened a little here)! My husband dropped to his knees in thanks when I told him. I've been fretting over it for two years now. It's 6.99 USD before tax on Amazon Kindle.

This was my first time using the PreOrder function (something I was always skeptical about using as ebooks are unlimited and usually PreOrders are to ensure you get something of limited stock, Amazon have a robust recommendations system meaning you are notified in a number of ways when an author has a new book out, and lastly, PreOrders are counted towards your sales rank as normal sales, meaning there is no ranking boost on the day of release). Overall, it went better than I expected. I gave myself a target of 100 in two weeks (I really didn't think anybody would bother to PreOrder, and my report says 1227. So I was wrong. *hangs head in shame*

ThunderClaw is again a plus length novel considering its genre, but I loved the characters, and I had a whole new world to build up as it's a different species of alien. You'll be happy to know I corrected the formatting issues Venomous had in this book by using a cool publishing tool called Vellum. It vanquished the eye-bleeding days of pain I used to experience when formatting.

This is the first time I've written about bisexual main characters. I had significant leeway in how my characters expressed their sexuality as I wrote of an alien culture. There were no conventions on behaviour, nor worries over accurately conveying prejudices in society keeping me from creating the polyamorous relationship I did.

Venomous' central theme was liberation from slavery. ThunderClaw focuses more on emotional freedom and allowing yourself to heal after a traumatic breakup.

The working cover was also edited to make it look more like the alien in the story, which was fun, though having to get used to Adobe Photoshop since they change the user interface every five seconds is not fun.

The main hero of the third book was introduced as well. The third book will be called Hel Bhyr.

Now, as I enrolled the book in Kindle Unlimited, I spent the last few days trying to wrap my head around the increased level of uncertainty that comes with using the scheme. It worked well last time, so, naturally I thought to try it again, but I am quite anxious over the whole pages read thing. The book is 974 KENPC (166k word count, 595 print pages), which is Kindle's normalised page count. So, I sort of am guessing that every 1000 pages or so someone has a read the whole book? It's strange as I can no longer say with certainty how many people have borrowed it as opposed to buying it. I guess I can divide the final numbers, but that is just me assuming everyone read to the end of the book or the same amount of pages. It does in theory seem more fair for longer works, but I do wish there was a higher level of reporting that told you at the end of the month the unique readers who borrowed.

I've updated my website, something cleaner and less maintenance intensive. My new release newsletter will be going out on Friday early evening.
Writing a good shorter novel is as difficult as writing a 600 page bruiser. I adore Science Fiction Romance (have been working on the Alien Warrior series almost exclusively for the last 18 months) and this story came to me sometime in early August. I did try to set it aside, as I'm working feverishly on ThunderClaw and Ash, but the main character kept seeping into the characters of those stories, and that wouldn't do.
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Most Sci Fi Romance I've read (concerning aliens) feature human women who fall for male aliens. My Alien Warrior series follows this, and it's fun, but it can be predictable. For U.M.O, I flipped this trend on its head focusing on a peaceful society lead by a female alien who claims a human male. I ditched a lot of the erotic elements to spotlight the dynamics between two alphas, and made it more smexy (smart+sexy) rather than slexy (slutty+sexy). I added robots, too, which was fun. I've only touched on A.I in Chaos Theory before this.
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I wanted the cover art to look much different for the novel, but I don't have the bandwidth to delve into an artwork project of that depth, especially not for a small book that won't bring in as much revenue as my other work. This cover only took a week or so for me mock up, and it represents the story elements well enough.
So Venomous is still performing wonderfully. The reviews (for the most part) are amazing, and I got a Kindle Unlimited Badge for being one of the most read authors in the program for January!

I got a $500 (about £320) bonus for this, which is nice.

My Author Rank looks pretty at the moment too. It's something I haven't paid attention to as "Rank Mania" is easy to get sucked into when it comes to Kindle. A small indulgence ever so often doesn't hurt though ;)

Humungous thank you to everyone who has bought and read the book!
*whoop whoop* New release just before the new year. I am super busy working on new stuff, learning more about my craft, living life, etc. My writing schedule is pretty much full until the end of 2015 (upcoming books include Flux Equinox (Cosmic Lovely 2), Ash (Dragon Souls 3) and Bone & Stone). Anyway....

Venomous is narrated in first and third person. First person from the heroine's point of view, and third person from the hero's. I think it works, bringing an authenticity to how Venomous thinks (his alien consciousness) and the more casual way a young woman might perceive the world.

It's currently priced at £3.29/$5.14. This title is currently only available on Kindle. Word count is just over 183k, my longest novel to date, well over two long books in one!

Alien abduction romance often tickles my fancy. I've wanted to write one myself for ages, but never seemed to have the time. Venomous isn't one of those aliens that is mostly human looking except a few menial differences. He's a proper E.T with serious cultural and biological differences that were wonderful to weave into a plausible(ish) storyline.

Enjoy.

It's the first time I've written about disability. Getting across a well rounded man who was upset about his disability but not bitter proved hard for me as a writer, I'm embarrassed to say. I read other books with disabled heroes and disliked them. The men were whiny and saved from their 'miserable lives' by the women, imho. Eben (hero of Bedevil) is just a nice bloke who meets a batty girl and chaos ensues. I think I brought his character across decently. *bites nails* I have to admit it was a challenge to write an Alpha Male while taking into account the reality of his altered physicality. There were so many of the physical/emotional/behavioural descriptors used when depicting an A/M I couldn't touch because it wouldn't make any sense.

Designing the book cover was hard too. Why? There are zero stock photos sexy enough in my opinion. At first I didn't have any visual indication there was a disabled protagonist. Then I thought about it. It annoys me when races on book covers are whitewashed or half arsed. This was no different. Just because it was difficult didn't mean I should give up, right? And self publishing equals freedom in stuff like this. It was important to me to at least try to give an accurate representation. Generally there isn't a sexy slant placed on disabled people, so no stock photos of sexed up couples. Me + Photoshop = Cover I Love Today But Will No Doubt Hate Tomorrow. I really wanted to have a better wheelchair on there (showing a frigging wheel at least), but again finding a stock photo of a wheelchair straight on proved ridiculously hard and making the chair bigger made him look like a little boy (which would have been ewww). So as my boyfriend says, "He kind of just looks like he's sitting on a chair...." But I tried!
I have not blogged in forever because, gosh, how other writers find the time when your busy with life, writing, learning more about your craft and publishing I'll never know.

The focus of this post was exciting enough to break through my self driven exile.

Apple iBookstore (US) has launched a promotion called Breakout Books. What makes this feature special is its prominent location in the books section on iTunes. If you're here with me in the UK or elsewhere and curious you can take a peek by changing the round flag located at the bottom right hand corner of your iTunes window.

Glamour is featured in the Sci Fi Fantasy section. *Hoo!* It has over 1100 ratings in the US and averaged at four stars.

If you're reading this you've probably already read my book, but I urge you to grab another from the collection that takes your fancy. Highlighted are some of the best self published authors worldwide. If nothing grabs you today keep checking. It has been mentioned the titles will be refreshed.

From a personal perspective this will keep me smiling for days. The Rae Wilder series as a whole has done well on iTunes, and I'm thrilled to be included in this innovative endeavor. From a professional standpoint it's encouraging to see another shift in a positive direction for a publishing option that's fast losing a reputation for being an easy, get-rich-quick scheme.

Each book featured represents a labour of love from an author. I congratulate and thank them all.

Inside (re-edited and a few minor story adjustments), and outside (new covers and titles).

For revision I'm working with Kim over at Another View Editing who is frustratingly good at pointing out my mistakes :)

The digital art was done by Renu Sharma who was a joy to work with. It was the first time I had comissioned art work, and I was pleased by how smooth and painless the process was from start to finish

The first Rae Wilder cover seemed to strike a cord and held me in good stead. I'm fond of it, but it's always good to keep things fresh.

I've had grumbles about the change of covers (some quite poetic and fervent). A title change is a substantial risk to take since a significant body of people have already bought the books, but that is the beauty of eBooks. iBooks, Nook and Kindle readers (if the right settings are switched on) will update automatically. I don't really have to worry about people double buying, because it's not possible on those platforms (unless you delete the title).

The branding is stronger on this second set. The changes were not done on a whim, as I explain later on in this post.

Demon Girl is now Glamour. Demon Day is now Compel. Demon Dark is now Enchant. Demon boy will now be called Summon. You can read the blurb for book four (I am aiming for a late summer 2012 release) HERE.
For fellow authors who might be considering large scale revisions like this, the cost is coming to just over £2300 (roughly 3600 USD). This was profit reinvested from previous sales. It has taken over five months to complete (I'm working on other projects – with focus it would have taken about a two months). There were several aspects which influenced my decision;

Target Readership
My current average readership is off what I expected and aimed for when reviewing the data available to me (data from social media). Older than expected by 6-10 years. Not a bad thing (a significant number of adults read YA fiction), but it means I'm not quite striking the cord I want with the younger end of the YA scale (13-22 year olds).

Branding
The other covers were not easy to connect at a glance when separated by other titles in recommendations, and when generally browsing in any of the eStores.

Titles
I needed them cleaner and more relevant to the overall themes in the books.

Relevancy
I wanted to capture the different kinds of supernaturals in the series, as they progressively become more prominent.

Defining Genre
Don't judge a book by it's cover is a good saying. It has become a saying for a reason. Most people do exactly what it advises against. That two second look at a cover can tell a reader your genre, readership, even your writing style at times. The genre of my books needed to be clearer: YA Paranormal/Fantasy Romance.

Discoverability
An eBook's shelf life is infinite. People can become desensitized to your cover – their eyes glancing over it because either; a) they've seen it so much they think they've read it; b) they have already crossed the book of their list of possibilities becasue the cover is not appealing to them. Backlist eBook covers will need changing every 2 - 3 years or so for new generations who have new tastes.

Cross Continental Appeal
My books tracked well on a European level (because I am European), and did okay internationally (US, AU & CA in particular), but they could be doing better. I had to find somewhere in the middle of these tastes (which is why I enjoyed working with Renu, she picked up on my preferred style quickly, and added a twist that could comfortably cross the North Atlantic and Pacific without losing any of the triggers). My books remain BrE (if another American tells me Glamour is spelt wrong I am going to scream).

Initial Results (no doubt I'll write this and things will change).
My books weren't suffering, but in the Nook store I've already seen a small jump from averaging in the 2000's to the 1000 -1500's. Amazon US, I was averaging in 10,000's, but now in the 7,000's. In UK, I was averaging 4,000's, but now 3,000's). There has been a measurable uptick in sales in the stores that have updated with the new artwork, considering books 1 to 3 are 17, 11 and 6 months old respectively, this is positive. iTunes has not updated yet. Sony, WH Smiths, Diesel and Kobo have all part updated.

My worry was they would all plummet into the abyss (might still happen), but so far so good. The primary future complication is the promotion of book four. It has been shown under the old branding. However, the series name Rae Wilder is what people seem to search for (example; rae wilder book three) or just an author search solves that problem (and the "more books by" details in the backs of Nook's, Kindles, iBooks, etc).

So you see, not a decision made on a whim. It was expensive and time consuming, and I'll probably have to revise the cover art in a few years, though the names will stay the same.Miss Fletcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09278839102817851843noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8875200132124921862.post-84987629011217346112012-01-13T11:45:00.000+00:002012-05-12T10:02:49.758+01:00Bye 2011 *waves* Hello 2012!2011 Snapshot
2011 was a good year for me financially and emotionally. What more can a girl ask for?

1) 12 months to sell over over 46,000 eBooks across all distribution channels (48,000 if you include my pen name)
2) I wrote and published five books (and three short stories under pen name Hanna Lui)
3) I gave up my day job in September to become a full time writer
4) I've had one Kindle UK Top 100 book, one Nook Top 100 book, and nine iBook category #1's across three different territories (CA, AU & UK) as well as my books bouncing up and down a number of competitive Kindle genre bestseller lists all year
5) I managed to blog at least once every single month
6) I re-designed my website (and I am finally happy with it)

I did a lot more of course, but the idea of listing it all is mind boggling. There were so many small things that meant so much to me last year. Compelling stuff, I tell ya.

So thank you to all who contributed to what I consider a great success in 2011. *mwah*

Planned 2012 Releases
2012 is going to mainly be a year of sequels and next installments for me. I am most excited about the release of Chaos Theory in April, which is the first in my new YA series Cosmic Lovely, and of course Demon Boy, the concluding book in Rae Wilder novels. Here is a tentative release schedule:
Moon Burn (sequel to Lunar Light) - March
Chaos Theory (Cosmic Lovely Book One) - April
Demon Boy (concluding book in Rae Wilder Series) - June
Bite, My Love (sequel to Die, My Love) - August
Burn (Book Two of Dragon Souls) - December

These front list release dates could change depending on the state of my creative sensibilities. At the moment it's looking about right. I'm also working with a new editor (Kim Sheard, Another View Editing) to go over my backlist. It's slow going since I'm revising and writing new stuff at the same time, but I'll get there.

Xmas Sales on Smashwords
I was thrilled to read this blog post; Smashwords Authors Experience Blowout I was the bestselling (total dollars) Smashwords distributed author over on B&N for Xmas Day & Boxing Day ... way cool!

Lastly, a bit of fun ... I'm listening to Walk Off The Earth's cover of Gyote's Somebody I Used To Know on repeat because in contrast to the sad lyrics the melody is so spritely, and I love the tone.

Onwards and upwards!
I got this through a few minutes ago, an interpretation of Rae from Demon Day.

This is clearly after Rae meets the shifters and is given new clothes from Alec ... after she gets her circlet. How ca-uooo-te!! The detail on the wings is fabulous, and Rae's Deer In The Headlights look has been captured brilliantly. Rae is even tugging on her hair and biting her lip! Click to enlarge the picture and you can see her fangs.

This was drawn by the talented Michelle Hewitt, and you can find out more about her and her work at Littlelovesartist.com

If anybody does do fan art or fan fiction on any of my stuff don't hide it away. I'd love to see it, there is no greater compliment ;)Miss Fletcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09278839102817851843noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8875200132124921862.post-82250334392639576842011-11-19T12:47:00.000+00:002011-11-19T12:47:47.705+00:00Sales Analysis ... What Can It Teach Me To Help Sell eBooks?Today, I am going to give an example of what I do to keep track of how well I am doing, and what I should be doing. There is a lot of high level advice for Indies to set "realistic sales goals" to keep them on the straight and narrow. So when the next I Just Sold 1Million eBooks In 10 Days With My Arms Tied Behind My Back story breaks those with 100 sales or less feel less like giving up.

I agree with this. I also believe keeping a close eye on how you set those realistic goals is key to success.

"I am going to sell 100 eBooks," is not a realistic goal. How are you going to sell those ebooks? To whom? Where?

"I am going to sell 100 units of Demon Day on Kindle in March by promotion on Goodreads groups and three different established book blogs," is a realistic goal.

I do not stalk my rankings (except when something exceptional is happening like breaking the Top 100 somewhere or grabbing a number 1 spot) but I do keep a hawk eye on how I am doing comparatively across eStores and where I should be focusing my attention.

Volume means jack-sh*t if you cannot sustain it. Someone who sells a few thousand one month with one title can drop off the lists within a week and never be able to climb back if they don't have a strong backlist to support them between frontlist releases.

What does the above data (in the pie chart) teach me?
A few things actually. Possibly;

1) I am not reaching enough of my target audience on Amazon
2) Apple readers are more likely to buy more than one of my titles
3) There are more fantasy readers on Apple & B&N

I am selling considerably lower than I should be on Kindle, meaning I have let my focus slip too far away from promoting myself over there.

It also highlights that to sell half as much as the same titles sitting in the Top 3,000 on Amazon that you have to reach the #1 spots of your genre in iBooks across two or more territories ... and stay there for more than one day.

In ascension, the split is how it should be (Kindle first, B&N second, etc), but the figures clearly show I am going wrong somewhere on Kindle. However, the market share in 2010 may have changed radically, I should take that into consideration. B&N, Kobo, and Apple have all done things in 2011 that could have seen more readers buying eBooks via their platforms. But ... Amazon have also improvements that may cancel out any market share the others gained.

What's wrong with focusing on one platform and ignoring the rest?
If you are only selling on one platform you need to do something to change that and fast. Unless you are in the Kindle or Nook Top 100 365 days a year with one title or have a backlist greater than 5 books strong you need to be selling consistently across all platforms available, and your sales split should reflect the most recent quantitate market share report you can find.

That way, if Amazon decide their algorithms needs an fine tuning you won't plummet into the nothingness and never see the bestseller lists without months of promotion (when you should be writing). If Apple think iBooks is too much of a hassle you won't be wondering, "What now?" If B&N turn around and say, "Let Amazon have it," you won't be left bewildered and confused that Kindle readers tell you to stick your $4.99 price points where the sun don't shine.

Note: If your main goal is just to have fun you can disregard everything I say. Do what pleases you.

What Can Apple, B&N and Amazon do to help me sell more books?
Once a month release a percentage report on what genres sold the best. I am not asking for volume, but percentages. With no other data it's nigh impossible to guess overall quantity of eBook sales, however, better knowledge of what books are trending well could help authors target their marketing efforts and effectively help those retailers make more money.

Example ... if I knew Paranormal Romance was trending well on Kindle I would be sure to promote the hell out of my paranormal romances to Kindle users. If suddenly Crime Fiction is trending well on Apple, those with such titles can act accordingly.

I appreciate looking at overall numbers is exciting, who doesn't want to see four or five digits in their Units Sold field, but understand that unless you leave it down to luck, you need to be aware of your strengths and weaknesses so you can do better in future, and don't waste your time promoting to brick walls.

Demon Dark found its way into the Apple iBookstore, and from the 14th to the 16th (today) reached the top spots in its genre (Sci-fi & Fantasy) across three different territories. It peaked at #9 in the US.
That small question prompts a big answer. This is tax we're talking about. It's a tricky subject and I was steering clear of posting anything about it, however, I am willing to outline my own circumstances to add clarity for purposes of selling direct and my experiences with it.

I am a British citizen registered with HMRevenue as self employed (sole proprietor). I am not VAT registered. I am in no rush to register as my turnover selling direct is nowhere near the £73,000 plus threshold for the reporting year.

As I provide goods that are "taxable supplies" I would have to register for VAT if either; my turnover for the previous 12 months goes over the VAT threshold (currently £73,000) or if I thought my turnover would soon go over this limit (within 30 days). I can opt to register for VAT even though I am below the VAT threshold. There are benefits to this. It is best to keep an eye on the VAT threshold as it may change and any change will be announced in The Budget.

VAT must not be charged by a business that isn't registered for VAT. I am below the VAT threshold and am not registered for VAT. However, this means I CANNOT claim on input tax! And should I ever exceed a turnover of £73,000 I am obligated to register for VAT and send this information to HMRevenue alongside my normal tax return. If I were a registered VAT business, and my imput tax (the VAT I pay for goods and services) was greater than the output tax (the VAT consumers pay on goods and services) I would get the difference between these two tax amounts back from HMRevenue ... commonly known as a tax rebate.

As a side note, when selling via a distributer (Amazon, Smashwords, CreateSpace, etc) they are obliged to report royalties to the IRS. This is why we must obtain a US Tax ID. The tax-withholding rate applied to royalty payments made to residents outside of the US is 30%. As the UK (and other countries) have treaties with the US this rate is reduced to 0% when you supply your distributor with your W8-BEN as we are required to pay taxes to our own government. The W8-BEN requires a Tax ID to be completed (don't you just love it!) and to get a US tax ID you need to complete a W-7 form (I know, you're loving it, you're loving it hard!). I'm in the middle of this process and to be blunt it's a butt ache.

Right. We need some general background on eBook VAT. The EU agreed member countries could reduce e-book VAT on "any similar physical medium that predominantly reproduce the same textual information content as printed books" in January 2011. This means that in Jan 2011 the UK could reduce their VAT on e-books or GET RID OF IT ENTIRELY without the EU sticking their nose in.

Great right? In this difficult economical climate how nice would that be. Well, they haven't reduced it. The VAT rate on eBooks in the UK is 20% and it sucks. VAT needs to be taken into account when selling eBooks direct though it should not be a concern until you breach the VAT threshold (if you do that you obtain godling status in my eyes). VAT registered companies will either show it to you separately or will make a note that says "price includes VAT". Look at a receipt or a small business website ... even on Amazon UK below the sale price they have a statement.

Yes. That's right. You get ONE picture. *giggles*

My eStore does have the ability to automatically add a relevant VAT charge to the consumer by country. Post registration (if I decide to register for those benefits), if my volumes ever got to a level where it was a significant loss by not charging VAT on top of my desired price point, I could implement VAT charges to consumers in a few clicks.

Allow me to break down a single eBook transaction.

Selling Direct with My Website (As A VAT Registered Business)
My list price for Demon Dark is £2.99
VAT on eBooks in the UK is 20%
The VAT is calculated at £0.598
The sale price of Demon Dark becomes £3.59 on my website.
My royalty rate is 100%
This gives me £2.99 per unit (minus payment supplier transaction fees) because THE CONSUMER paid the VAT charge

Selling Direct with My Website (As A Non VAT Registered Business)
My list price for Demon Dark is £2.99
I am under the £73,000 threshold and do not need to be VAT registered (though I can be for some benefits). VAT must not be charged by a business that isn't registered for VAT.
The sale price of Demon Dark becomes £2.99 on my website.
My royalty rate is 100%
This gives me £2.99 per unit (minus payment supplier transaction fees)

Has nobody wondered why when Amazon Price matches to meet iBookstore why we in UK get irritated? Apple deducts VAT from the list price we set to get a sales price the consumer sees ... so for example my earnings via Smashwords are 60% of of the price point I set minus the relevant VAT. Amazon price match thinking "ooh, lower price" when in actuality, I'm already getting less money per unit via Apple as I am absorbing the VAT. So as an author I get screwed front and back. Though I am not sure of this is just via Smahwords or direct via iTunes connect as well.

As a consumer buying an eBook from a VAT registered business, I pay 20% VAT whereas if I bought the same book in print from that retailer I would have paid 0% VAT. Because eBooks are generally cheaper than printed books, consumers are not that bothered - yet. As ebooks become more popular this will become a real problem for the UK, and if the government does not take their finger out it will severely stunt the growth of eBooks once consumers put two and two together to get four.

Consumers buying direct from authors not only give the author more money for their work, and experience something much more personal, they also pay less for their eBook if the author is below the VAT threshold.

My dream is not to be a millionaire, but to be able to support myself and my family doing what I love; writing. I don't need millions to do that, and authors who can develop a loyal and sustainable fan base via retail and direct sales can enjoy that dream.

Can you imagine it. *sigh*

Now, I am NOT saying abandon Kindle, iBooks or Nook. No way. Connivence is bliss. I am saying diversify. I buy my books from Kindle, Kobo, iBooks, Smashwords, and I would buy direct if it was offered to me. Choice is the spice of life.

No doubt I have forgotten to mention something that will bite my bum, but I hope that begins to explain VAT for the purposes of selling directly, and to give you a better idea of what knowledge is required. It seems daunting, but once you have full understanding, it's no more difficult than any other learned skill.

Quite frankly, what my government are doing is *badword*. They are twiddling their thumbs when other countries in the EU are taking advantage of the reduced rate. Print books in the UK are 0% VAT yet for some mystical reason unbeknown to the world they categorize eBooks as digital products rather than simply adding them to the books category.

If in future eBooks are exempt from VAT, the registration will be unnecessary for authors who only sell eBooks. This would make it less frightening for authors to consider selling directly.

If you get it (and care) you can sign the E-BOOKS VAT ABOLITION petition here http://submissions.epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/114

IMPORTANT: I am not a tax expert and before you do anything get an accountant or have a conversation with HMRevenue. It's business, and needs to be treated as such. Be fully aware before doing anything. :)
There is a minimized and floating red tab in the top left hand corner that says "Buy eBooks". I added my own eStore where you can buy my eBooks (DRM free) and sideload them onto your eReader. In this post that is what I want to focus on, a high level and holistic overview of implementating such a thing. Indies should at least consider selling eBooks direct. The only other person who I know who does it is J A Konrath, but he has a bespoke store that was built for him by a third party (the pros and cons of which we shall discuss later).

After implementation, I tested the entire process by offering Die, My Love for free to readers. I set up a discount code you had to enter at checkout, and that went surprisingly well (I squealed when I made my first 75 cents) but, since the eBook drawing the attention was free I didn't get my hopes up too high.

I added Demon Dark to my eStore the same day I uploaded to Kindle and Smashwords (31st October 2011). 15 days and I have sold over 1200 copies of Demon Dark, and 65 of those were direct! How cool is that! I've sold 68 via Smashwords, so in comparison I was pleased there was enough trust and interest from readers to buy direct from me (the rest are all Kindle sales. The book is not on Nook yet, and iBooks only appeared on Monday. I grabbed #1 in UK and AU in Scifi & Fantasy ... #2 in CA an #9 in US *whoop!*).

If you're thinking of selling eBooks direct it can work on a small scale. I'll never make as much direct as I would via a large retailer, I simply have not been around long enough for that kind of sustainability, but ... even such a modest number of direct sales is nothing to sniff at when combined with other revenue streams. No retailer gets a slice of those royalties at all. Just *winces* the tax man, but that is an unavoidable part of life. The tax man personally helped me sell each eBook unit, of course.

The process as a consumer to buy via my eStore is painless. There were a few blips here and there with a couple of orders that required me to intervene, and that was mostly people not knowing how to sideload eBooks! So I created a tutorial page (HERE). The eBook files (ePub and .mobi) are downloaded into a ZIP folder from a unique link the consumer is automatically emailed. I decided to give both files (rather than list separately) so that if you have an eReader and a tablet (like moi), you can use both. The payments are done securely via Paypal, so I don't have to worry about payment information, data protection and compliance. It costs up to £20 a month (depending on exchange rate) for the shop itself (and that is the most expensive option you can choose). I made that back in 12 hours of Demon Dark's release, and the rest of the money will go towards its upkeep for the next 6 months.

The provider I use is Wazala! Set up is easy, and if you are able to cut, paste, and have a solid understanding of how your website works, and how readers navigate your site (*frowns* if you do not why are you not tracking page views and site navigation?), you can use it too. You can either embed the store entirely into your site as a separate page, or have a floating page, like I do.

You can test the experience by going to my website www.penelopefletcher.com

Pros
Offer targeted discounts
Make better use of occasional PPC advertising
You make 100 royalty per unit
Easy to manage and maintain
Greater sense of control over the business
It just looks cool ... *ahem* professional.

Cons
Dealing with taxes (we have to do this being Indie anyway, so meh)
For those with sales below the 100 units per month threshold the redirected sales would grossly affect their rankings in retailer stores and this could cause problems finding new readers who browse lists
Initial outlay

Sexy Alternative
Use a developer to build you a bespoke eStore. The best part is everything is inHouse (everything being the eBook listing, email templates, files hosted on your sever, etc). This solution would be optimal if you currently have, say, tens of thousands of sales per month, or have the capital for a 3rd party to build this for you *dreamy sigh*. I am taking a wild out-my-butt guess, but let's say £2,000 to get a basic functioning bespoke eStore built for you. If you know you can sell direct plus 200 units a month at a price point above £2.99 after 4 months the investment has been returned and you are golden. If you can sell eBooks direct in such quantity you should consider this option.

A downside of bespoke is support. If my eStore breaks I can get on the phone to Wazala and ask they fix it snappy like. With a bespoke store, I assume you would have to buy levels of support from the third party, and if you didn't it might get expensive to fix the occasional break. Insurance aka incaseshithappens can be a financial drain #welovechrisrock.

A further downside is listings. Unless you are given a console by 3rd party to login and manage products without having to fiddle with lines of code, you may find it arduous to add, remove or update a listing quickly. And if you are not comfortable with tinkering about with code that is a further complication (I break stuff all the time when fiddling, but readers are quick to pick up on it).

The largest upside is the complete and utter control. Retailers could collapse around you and you would still have a hardy revenue stream ... if you have a grasp of how to reach your market and promote yourself.

Konrath has a pretty sweet set up (I was nosey). I would have a little more fun with it though, maybe add mobile payments, a QR code, and discount coupon in the confirmation page to drive repeat business.

My Worse Case Scenario
I sell less than it costs to maintain the shop. I can decomission the thing in a few clicks and I'm not tied into a long term contract with Wazala, so, there is little risk here to me financially.

My Best Case Scenario
My direct sales grow as more readers visit my website and see the option is available to them.

I could get something bespoke done, but I would not make enough money to return the investment in years rather than months (not cool). Using a third party supplier suites my current needs. I have enough other stuff to deal with at the moment, and if I ever reach a point where I can consistently sell 200 eBooks plus a month directly I will be investing in a bespoke eStore.

I will get few "new" customers buying direct. I predict and presume people buying direct will be loyal fans or hardcore bargain hunters. These readers are internet savvy, love to read, and love their eReaders. Selling directly should help me take the relationship between me and my readers to a new level.

So ... will you at least consider it? Time, Cost and Benefit analysis time! Yay! If you decide it's not viable for you consider pulling together (with a trusted partner) and have one store you both promote and embed into your website. Innovation people *waves pompoms* I suspect there are many with loyal followings who could be knocking this out of the park.

Indies need to stop repeating themselves on the differences between self and traditional publishing (we know and if you don't know by now what rock have you been hiding under?). Focus more on what you are doing on a day to day basis to improve, and what you are offering your readers. It pains me when I see someone relying solely on Kindle. I can almost hear the groan of a funeral dirge. Try to make one positive improvement every single day. So much talking, and not much action going on.
You need to be able to do so if you shop Smashwords or my eStore. I've summarized the process into five easy steps (and found some insightful YouTube videos): Sideload

Once you've done this process from start to finish once, and are used to it, you can literally do this in minutes. I have added a version of these instructions to my store, and a link in the download email to the instructions (for future reference).

Demon Dark….
Book Three of the Rae Wilder novels (Demon Dark) is delayed by a month.

The delay came because I quit my job in June, thinking I had enough time to sort everything out that I needed to by September. However, I ended up agreeing to work in my old job for an additional 3 months. I tried to cram everything “bookish” outside my normal working hours, but despite working as hard as I could, I did not make it *sad face*.

This impacted everything, a nasty ripple of delays across the board. Die My Love was released two weeks late, book reviews were posted late, all my planned posting was rearranged into bizarre chaos. I’m still trying to streamline and adjust to my new life which after 5 years of routine has turned upside down, so bear with me.

Things get delayed all the time, and I’m now realizing it’s so hard to catch up! No wonder TFL (British tube/rail company) is always in such a mess.

Anyway, I get so wrapped up in what I'm doing I honestly forget that people are quite literally checking everyday and waiting for my stuff to come out. So, I'm off focusing on a story (this is always the main reason behind my social media quietness) and people are tearing their hair out over where my books are.
I've noticed a few comments about who “looks after” my fans. Nobody does but me, and the lovely darlings that you are, you'll email me, tweet me, Facebook me, Goodreads messages, etc, and I have to respond to you all (because that is what you have grown used to from me). That takes a lot of time out of all the work I have scheduled. It’s a painfully slow crawl in my responses until my time is freer, and I can dedicate decent periods of time to talk with you all (I genuinely enjoy doing so).

I am NOT saying “don’t write me.” Not at all. I love it, and those I do manage to respond to know this. Just do be aware that if I don’t respond to ALL of you, it’s because I’m working so you guys have more stuff to read!

My Website….
My bare domain names are not working (PenelopeFletcher.com/PenelopeFletcher.co.uk).
For example;
To those who have been flitting from pillar to post over the last few weeks looking for me, I do apologize. I have been in book writing mode, and when I do this everything I am goes into it. In fact, I generally communicate with my friends and family in grunts, clicks, and hand signals.

For your info, once I announce a new release the distribution pattern goes like this:

Day of release: Available from Smashwords immediately
Available from My eStore immediately
48 hours later Kindle
7 days later iBooks
14 days later Sony
21 days later Nook
4 weeks later Diesel

I have no control over that element of distribution, just when I upload. And remember, I don't have anybody to look after my social accounts I do it all myself. If you haven't heard from me in a while there is a good reason. When the ebook does start hitting all the eStores I will tweet and update the website, Facebook, and send out a newsletter with coupons for a discounted copy, etc.

It drove me crazy that I could not see how I was doing on iBooks across territories (sure I'm not the only one), as I love iBooks, it's the number one eStore and buying/eReading experience of my choice, and to do well there (regardless of sales figures) is a huge personal aspiration of mine. Now I can see! And I've learnt that I have grabbed number one spots on six different occasions with some of my books, and I didn't even know (the first and only one I'd known about was Die, My Love in UK).
If you use http://bookchart.info/ and find the site useful please leave the creator a message to say thanks via the contact page. In his FAQ's he wonders if it would be useful to anybody to know the charts! Ha!

It only tracks books that have appeared in the Top 100 of any sub-category. I found the best way to search was to type in my name in the search field. Read the About page for more information about how it works, etc, http://bookchart.info/aboutMiss Fletcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09278839102817851843noreply@blogger.com2
